As part of its ongoing commitment to sustainability, the Australian Open 2025 (AO 2025) will introduce an exciting initiative to reduce single-use plastic waste and promote eco-friendly practices.

Tennis fans attending the tournament will be served beverages in reusable cups, a move spearheaded by Sustainability Victoria. The cups, created by Victorian company bettercup, are strong, durable, and designed to be reused multiple times, offering a significant step forward in reducing the environmental impact of the event.

A total of 38,000 reusable cups will be distributed across selected places around the AO precinct. This initiative is expected to prevent the use of 50,000 single-use cups, effectively saving approximately 400 kilograms of plastic waste from entering landfills. When these cups reach the end of their life cycle, they can be recycled, contributing to a circular economy and further reducing waste.

Matt Genever, CEO of Sustainability Victoria, highlighted the significance of the initiative, emphasizing, “This partnership enables and encourages reuse behavior, helping tennis fans reduce their carbon footprint.” By switching to reusable cups, the Australian Open is setting a new standard for major sporting events, demonstrating how large-scale events can contribute to a more sustainable future.

The reusable cups will be washed on-site by Green Plate, a social enterprise focused on offering plastic-free food and beverage alternatives. Tennis Australia’s Director of Sustainability, Matthew Nicholas, spoke about the long-term vision for the tournament: “In 2025, the AO reusables program is projected to prevent the waste of more than 100,000 single-use cups, plates, and bowls. This initiative is a significant milestone in our journey towards reducing the environmental impact of the Australian Open.”

In addition to the reusable cups, the partnership with Sustainability Victoria aligns with the broader sustainability strategy that aims to support Victoria’s transition to a circular economy. As the Australian Open continues to lead the way in sustainability efforts, this initiative underscores the power of sports in driving change and encouraging fans to adopt environmentally responsible behaviors.

With AO 2025, tennis fans will not only experience world-class matches but will also contribute to a greener future by supporting this innovative, waste-reducing initiative.
